On Friday we had a wonderful, kid free date night. Instead of the usual dinner and movie at the Waterfront, we decided to mix it up a bit. Our plan was to go to Bihari in Newlands, have a lovely dinner, drink some wine and go home and sleep the sleep out of Friday night. Like adults.
However, the night ended a bit differently.
Before I carry on, I know you’re asking yourself, “Why Bihari?”. So let me tell you, it’s because when I was with Laura-Kim, Mandy and Brett the other night they kept talking about it and it’s all I could think about the rest of the week. And if you don’t know, you go there for some of the best curry in Cape Town – they’re not paying me to say this, I just feel like I need you to know. You’re welcome.
Anyway.
We indulged in all the amazing curry (that didn’t have dairy in it) and chatted at length about our Italy holiday (and how we’re going to lose so much weight because we won’t be able to afford any food haha). On the topic of food, I didn’t even have any of the garlic naan bread that I sometimes dream about, because it’s freaking delicious. You need to know how much self control that took. Nevertheless, we still enjoyed our meal.
It was roughly 9.30 and we were pretty much ready to leave, when Seth dropped a bomb, “What about visiting all of our old stomping grounds hey bru? Go see what’s cracking at like, Tin Roof or Springboks or something.“. OK, so full disclosure, he didn’t actually have a jock accent. I think. Or maybe he did because he was trying to fit into that old life again, I can’t remember.
A bit of background. We both grew up in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, which meant that when we went “clubbing” back in the day we hit Claremont or Obs. To give away my age a bit, here’s some of the places we used to go: Sprinboks, Stones, Fubar, Billy The Bums, Cool Runnings and Tin Roof. We went other places, but they don’t exist anymore and for the life of me, I can’t remember their names. The problem is that Bihari is just down the road from most of these places, so I couldn’t really say no. Plus it sounded kinda fun.
The result had us walking into Tin Roof at 9.30pm on a Friday night…
And well, in case you were wondering, this is what Tin Roof looks like at 9.30pm on a Friday night…
EMPTY as flip.
Plus, I’m sad to say that the bouncer took one look at us and let us straight in. I ALWAYS get bounced, or asked for ID. I thought I’d be excited for the day that I wasn’t asked anymore, except that I’m not because now I’m just old. But back to walking in…
No one! Not one single soul except for two bartenders and a “manager” who could still have been at school.
But we didn’t let that deter us, things were sure to pick up. We ordered a drink, got two, because of happy hour and settled in.
Wow guys, clubbing is so not what it used to be. Or maybe it is and I’m just viewing it from an old persons perspective. We were by FAR the oldest people there. People only started dribbling in at around 10.30 and then by like, 11.30 “their busiest time”, it wasn’t even half full.
We got a bit bored people watching children, so we went down the road to Boogie which was freaking pumping, wow. It was totally full. Too full in fact. Couldn’t wait to leave and get snuggled up in my children free bed.
And that was that.
I realised that this is SO not my life anymore and neither do I ever want it to be my life again.
Bring on the family dinners and Netflix and Chill.

Hehe Vaughan and I visited these scary places once upon a time. I had some fun times there but was ever a massive Claremont fan. Think you may have left Conti’s out ( think tiny, hole in the wall- literally. Opposite tin roof. ) I have no desire to return there but we do sometimes feel like a night on the town…in town. Have the urge to dance every now and again 😉 love this post
Oh yes Conti’s!!! Totally forgot about them but I’m not sure that I went there that often. There are still some good places to go and shake your booty at – Town is definitely the best bet.
Haha, this is hysterical 🙂 Unfortunately, most of our old haunts have also closed down and the major ones haven’t changed a bit… x
This was one of the times you didn’t know what “Netflix and chill” meant heeheee
YES!! Oh my gosh hahaha
