A Little Slice Of The Good Life – Robertson Adventures

One of our favourite things to do is drive into a brand new place, with no plan or agenda and just see where we land up.

I get that this approach doesn’t work for everyone, but we’re the type that enjoy just winging it.  Good or bad, there’s nearly always a story to tell afterwards.  And also, our kids are finally at the age now where the only thing they need to get sort of on time is food.  And maybe access to a toilet might be good too.  So making pit stops for naps or warming bottles or all the rest of that is all behind us now (thank goodness).

It makes exploring as a family so much more fun and so much less stressful.  I don’t know why I was thinking about having another baby and starting all of that all over again.  I must have temporarily lost my damn mind.

This past weekend we headed out to Robertson and stayed on the outskirts of the town at a place called Orange Grove Farm.  Guys.  This place is amazing.  We stayed in the Fineview cottage which sleeps 5.  There is a spacious lounge with fire place, a fully kitted out kitchen and an undercover braai area outside.  We’ve had the privilege of staying at a few different self catering establishments and spoiler alert: They are NOT all made equal.

Orange Grove stands far above the rest for all the thought that they put into their guests’ experience.  Not only is there free wifi, towels for both bathing and swimming, copious amounts of firewood (and firelighters), wonderful smelling lotions and shampoos (made on the farm), DSTV, splash pool and aircon.  There are also little things that make the stay so much more homey – a print out of the expected weather conditions for your stay, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, serviettes and someone that comes to clean up your cottage at a convenient time for you every day.  That last one?  A flipping gift for me!  I mean, I struggle to keep up my kitchen when I’m home trying to be all house wifey – I hate having to worry about that on holiday too.

We spent our time in front of the fire playing Lego, sipping coffee while wishing we lived on a wine farm all the time and relaxing.

On the Saturday morning we wandered around Robertson and stumbled on a rather unassuming place called Spaces.  From the outside it really doesn’t look that great, but you should totally go inside.  Wow.  We were blown away.  And so was out bank account.  What?  I couldn’t NOT buy a few mementos from the decor section to take home with us.  And also “The Venue” is amazing.

The rest of the time we spent at Orange Grove Farm, reading, braaing and soaking in some good old family time.  It’s possibly been one of the best and most relaxing holidays that we’ve had all year.

• Houw Hoek Inn – I’ve lost count of the amount of times we’ve been there, in fact the kids go there for a night every holiday (with their Grandparents)! Another time we were there.
• Hermanus – Also a regular holiday spot.
• Grabouw – If you’re going there you need to stay at the Old Mac Daddy
• We also went to Ceres and that was amazing – one of my most memorable holidays.
