RIEBEEK EAST, SOUTH AFRICA
OK, I have to admit something… Before heading out on this adventure I didn’t know that Riebeek East existed. I just didn’t. Maybe it’s Cape Town ignorance or maybe it’s because it’s because it’s the tiniest town I have ever seen, either way, we were surprised to be there. We literally drove from the one side to the other without even realising it haha.
But we were glad to be there and to stay in a house again. Guys you forget how freaking lucky we are that we have toilets right next to our bedrooms, or at the least warmly inside of our houses. And a hot shower. Gosh, this is something I will no longer take for granted. We were blessed to be able to stay at the generosity of Yvonne and Jimmy who run Lost In Time.
Given the fact that Riebeek East may only have one shop and a beautiful church you may be inclined to brush over it as a place to skip of your travels around South Africa. And I guess if you are looking for the hustle and bustle of city type life then it possibly wouldn’t actually be for you. But if you are looking to get away from technology, want to sink into nature and marvel at how simple life can be, then this is totally for you!
We enjoyed the feeling of being “off grid” without actually being completely without the luxuries we take for granted. Plus, if you can’t deal without a variety of shops to spend your time and money in, then Grahamstown is only about 40 minutes away. And Bathurst just a bit further than that for a nice day out near a massive pineapple – as one does.
At this point we were still a month in to the adventure and life was still fresh. Getting used to the smaller space and being squished together was still a lot. But the good news was that the side walls that we ordered arrived and so we could add an extra room onto our space.
The bad news is that they actually don’t fit the way they are supposed to and so we hard ever use them. But you live and you learn and this was definitely one of those learning experiences for us.
As you can see, Seth underwent a bit of a change at this point in our travels… No more jeans… Nope, it was time to whip out the travel pants. He’d been searching for them for a while so what luck when we found them inside a giant pineapple in Bathurst.
On that note, I could easily have spent a couple days in Bathurst, so if you are planning an itinerary then you must add this as a stop on it, you won’t regret it.
We also had to stop in Grahamstown to pick up the sides for the tent and to do some laundry. The absolutely great thing about Grahamstown being a student town is that this is the very least that we have ever paid for laundry ever! R80 foor something like 3 loads – washed, dried and folded. Magic!!
Aside from eating at a million different restaurants there, we were hoping to get to see the Camera Obscura at the Observatory Museum. Sadly it was closed for renovations and I am absolutely bummed about this. I learned so much about it that I was really excited to see it in person. But I suppose now we have a reason to go back.
What we did do to pass the time and was totally free was go Geocaching. I spoke about it once before… aaaaaaaaaages ago. But we never actually got around to doing it ourselves. But with free time waiting for laundry and a tight budget, we gave it a go. It was SO fun!!
While we were in Riebeek East we enjoyed a wonderfully delicious home cooked meal with Yvonne and Jimmy and learned a bit more about the town. The church is 195 years old and has recently been renovated to bring it back to its beautiful self. It is just wonderful. The house that they are staying in is also really old and has a story to tell as well. I love old houses, they just have so much character.
We really enjoyed our time in Riebeek East and sharing time with new people and hearing their stories. It’s one of the best parts of this adventure.
Scroll through the daily Instagram posts of the days while we were there, some extra videos and more pictures, if that’s your thing.
A bit of an idea of what goes in to a travel day…
Then here are a few more pictures of our stay there…

You guys sound totally amazing – pity you didn’t drive over the hill to Alicedale for a cuppa with us. Just a lick and a spit! Next time you in the area, please fall in the door. Would love to meet you and hear your stories. Warmest to you, Eli and John ::-)
Next time we are in the area we will definitely do just that!!
Pity you missed the Camera Obscura. It is very cool.
I know, I’m SO sad. It’s such a cool concept that I was hoping to teach the kids
