On Monday we had a double birthday party – both Knox and I got a whole year older.
Even the Government was excited for us this year as we were super blessed with getting a Public Holiday on our birthday (with Heritage Day falling on Sunday, the Monday became a holiday – score). With this in mind we thought it would be a super idea to have the party on the same day as our birthday. The logic was that it would be easier – the whole weekend to prep etc.
The unforeseen side effect is that we spent the entire day prepping, entertaining and then collapsing in a heap after everyone left. It was really great being surrounded by friends and family on our special day but I don’t know if I’d do a party on a birthday again in a hurry. I don’t actually feel like I even had a birthday – so does that mean I’m still 30?
Now on to the theme. This one felt a bit lacking for me to be honest.
Trying to think of themed party food that would look part of the theme was basically impossible. Even Pinterest let me down. There was just nothing! So instead of stressing about it we went with a red, yellow and blue theme table. We had it out in that garage this year because another thing that consistently comes with our birthday every year is rain… So we needed a safe, dry spot to house everyone should it get wet outside (which it totally did)!
On the table we had a variety of red, blue and yellow sweets, strawberries, jellies, cupcakes, milktarts, blueberries, bananas and Chipniks. We also made some posters as a back drop for the tables but our local spray paint carrier was out of yellow and blue. Which I think would have made a huge difference to the overall look and feel of it. But that’s just me being totes pedantic about things other people probs wouldn’t even have looked at twice.
The cake was another story (as you will see in the video). Optimus Prime had a bit of a rough night. The icing dripped all over, the fondant cracked everywhere, it started to sag to the side and it basically looked nothing like what we envisioned in our head. Which is pretty much how every cake goes too. Despite all that, I think overall it looked OK. If you looked at only the one side and squinted slightly. hahah
The only game that we did was pass the parcel. Inside we had a book. Which in hindsight was a really bad idea because then we had to wrap it 25 times (to account for all the kids). Next time, the smaller the end present the better!
Also, we didn’t have music set up and trying to do it with my phone was an epic fail, but whatevs, I think they had fun!
For the party packs (as you will see in the vid) we got the kids tickets to the Transformers Exhibition that’s coming to Cape Town in November. My friend Hilary hooked us up and I’m so thankful to her! Knox is also BEYOND excited for November so that we can go and see the actual Transformers.
We made a little video about the whole party experience this year which was quite fun to do. It’s a bit long but it captures the run up to the day and some of the actual party too.
And then some pictures. There’s not a lot of everyone else as I am aware that a lot of people wouldn’t really want their ids faces plastered all over our blog. So with them in mind I edited them a smidge.
