Happy South African Heritage Day peoples of the world, and more importantly South Africa.
If you are like me and are not very good at knowing what our South African holidays are supposed to be about you are just as stumped as to exactly what Heritage Day is all about. I did a little bit of Google-ing on this one – just to make sure I’m getting it right. Apparently the basis of Heritage Day is:
“On this day, South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.”
Which apparently now means that everyone needs to braai today. And while I am most definitely not adverse to a “lekker braai”, I’m not sure how they got it right to infer that all South African’s heritage is that they used to meet around a braai, but there you go. It’s supposed to be that we all unite together around our own braai’s – because that’s what we do best over here… Does anyone buy into this whole “Braai Day” thing?
Anyway, we are about to leave on a little road trip with the kids as my birthday present from my in laws where there will probably not be any braaing – unless Knox is finally successful at evading us and gets too close to the fire.
This mini holiday really couldn’t have come at a better time. Every morning I wake up, I could quite easily turn right around and crawl back into bed for the next month. I’d like to pretend that this move and all the hectic decisions and financial concerns that come with it will either just sort themselves out or just disappear altogether. Not too much to ask if you ask me.
But instead of completely ignoring it, we are going away as our little family to leave it all behind – even if it is just for one night. Sometimes all you need is one night of focusing on the seemingly less important things in life – birthdays, crackling fires, running on the grass, full breakfasts, snuggling under blankets, swinging in the sunlight, playing ring-a-ring-a-rosie until we can’t stand up because we’re so dizzy, staring at the snow capped mountains and just generally enjoying each other’s company without the distractions of our electronic world.
So there will be a lot less of sitting and thinking about everything that needs to be done and telling the kids “just wait, I need to do this” or “please hold on a second I just need to finish that”. And a whole lot more of this:
I hope that you have some fun things planned for your day off today?
And if you were lucky enough to be off yesterday and didn’t see the awesome new giveaway that we have – go and check out how you can get your hands on this gorgeous ring!
