We had the perfect morning routine for months and then it all went to crap.
I don’t know how it happened but suddenly instead of the Rule Of One applying, both my girls decided to become lazy in the morning. Neither of them wanting to get up or get dressed. Kyla dressing at a speed only a sloth could rival and Riya choosing an outfit and then crying seconds later because she doesn’t want to wear that anymore.
I was at my wits end.
Then I got a little package in the mail. It was this box of Lego Duplo, the My First Caterpillar one. I opened the wrapping it came in and then stealthily left it on the kitchen counter. Waiting to see if they’d notice. Which of course they did. How they don’t notice the clothes all over their bedroom floor but can see a new box on the counter will forever baffle me.
Anyway. I used it as a reward. Because that’s what all good parents do am I right? Well, that’s debatable. But I still did it because that’s how I roll when I’m about to explode every morning.
After a few mornings of practice they finally got it right and had the joy of opening their new Duplo that afternoon. They were so freaking excited it was like I was giving them chocolate or something. You could not wipe the smiles off their faces. They all huddled around our coffee table and we opened the box. The blocks fell out and they started to build their first caterpillar.
And then they started fighting.
So I took it all away.
Yes, there was much crying and pleading, but I stood my ground. The next day we tried again and it was a huge success. They shared, helped Knox build it and had fun joining it up with their other Duplo products.
Then yesterday I whispered to Riya, something along the lines of, “Hey Ri, do you remember when you used to put all your clothes at the end of the bed the night before and then when you woke up you’d be the first person dressed?”. She replied with a cautious, “Yeah”. So I plodded on, “That was awesome hey? Do you think you could do it again?”.
And bam.
The next morning at 5.45 I was being woken up with a tapping on my shoulder, she looked at me, smirked, did a twirl and shouted, “I’m the first one done!!” and proceeded to go and play Lego in the lounge until the rest of us surfaced. It was brilliant.

LEGO Duplo is just the best for those motor skills!
Can’t wait till my boy is old enough to bribe…. Aka use rewards with
My daughter would love this ?
Lately almost everyday! My little one found her lego’s again
My toddler doesn’t have a lot of Lego so I’d say about ten times.
Cindy you make me laugh!!!! I DONT MIND BEING SHOUTED AT
Please can I win, I’m so tired of Dusty and all the other aeroplanes every single morning – Duplo would be a welcome distraction. x
To be completely honest, it i sbut a dream of ours to step on Lego. Bub is just too young at the moment, but we often pop in to the toy shops and fanatsize about our house floors being laden with Lego. But with bub turning 1 very soon, our Step-on-a-Lego-experience is not too far off.
worst feeling ever to stand on a lego .
Wooohooo! Duplo is a big thing in our house- that’s Daddy and Son bonding time (building time?)!
Oh gosh, too numerous to mention – OK,I don’t remember but what I do remember is that it is very painful.
Lego is just the all time best for kids to play with and let their imagination go wild. Love it!
Lovely prize
a few times, specially middle of the night checking in on my daughter and standing on it and trying not to scream from the pain
My lb is almost 2, and my hubby is dying to start getting him into lego, so duplo is the best starter lego kit!
As a kid, my younger sisters were obsessed with lego, and as the older sister, I always suffered the brunt of painfully stepping through the lego minefield in our room room to get from my bed to the door! ?
Stepped on them plenty a time, also almost slipped and broke something.
would be a great win for my 5 year old daughter
I just love lego…it allows the kids to play and develop their fine motor skills, while I sip on a much needed cup of coffee
Awesome prize and blog
The rule in our house: if you leave it on the floor, it goes up the vacuum cleaner. There is lots of lego death in our house…
I have stood on Lego countless times! Think i nearly twisted my ankle once too! Lol
I have a fear of standing on Lego….the pain…my son is a neat freak and packs his all up. My daughter on the other hand. It’s a war zone!
Haha, I am fortunate to be free of painful legos, however my husband often gets caught out…..especially in the evening. I tease and say its my intruder alert/protection.
I have stood on lego so many times, but my worst is when I’m barefoot and checking on kids at night and standing on a piece in the dark…and you can’t even react because I don’t want to wake kids ?
The worst is: under the fleshy, middle part of your bare foot; on the stairs; with a cup of coffee in your hand, lol!
Ah Lego! I love that our family is finally getting to experience the joy of it all!
